What is History of Art and Design?
"Art History: Making the Visible Legible."
Donald Preziosi
No specific prior knowledge or level of attainment in the History of Art and Design is required. It will be suited to students who are interested in art, design or architecture but do not necessarily have the skills to follow a practical course or as a complement to a practical course. The course will include visits to art galleries, museums and architecture of interest.
It encourages first-hand experience and enjoyment of works of art, architecture, craft and design, whilst developing critical, research and other skills.
If you dream of working in the world of art or architecture, this course could be where you launch your career. You might want to become an art advisor or investor, gallery curator, freelance writer or even a film and television stylist
The first year of the course takes a broad approach to the history of art. This is designed to give you a strong foundation in appreciating art from 500BC to the present day. The two key topics you'll study during the year are 'Visual Analysis and Interpretation' and 'Themes in the History of Art'.
