AS Course Outline
What is History of Art and Design?
"Art History: Making the Visible Legible." Donald Preziosi
No specific prior knowledge or level of attainment in the History of Art and Design is required.
It will be suited to students who are interested in art, design or architecture but do not necessarily
have the skills to follow a practical course or as a complement to a practical course.
The course will include visits to art galleries, museums and architecture of interest.
It encourages first-hand experience and enjoyment of works of art, architecture, craft and design,
whilst developing critical, research and other skills.
If you dream of working in the world of art or architecture, this course could be where you
launch your career. You might want to become an art advisor or investor, gallery curator,
freelance writer or even a film and television stylist
The first year of the course takes a broad approach to the history of art. This is designed to give
you a strong foundation in appreciating art from 500BC to the present day. The two key topics
you'll study during the year are ‘Visual Analysis and Interpretation’ and ‘Themes in the History
of Art'.
What Skills Will Students Develop When Studying History of Art and Design?
- History of Art and Design enables students to develop intellectual, imaginative and creative
powers.
- Students will gain first-hand experience and critical awareness of works of art, architecture,
craft and design,
- Students will develop an understanding of the relationships between and the connections across
art, architecture, craft and design and society at large.
- Students will develop their essay writing skills during the course and will have to assimilate
information and present it in a clear and concise way.

Themes in History of Art
- Provides candidates with an appreciation of some significant art
historical themes from classical Greece to the art of the twentieth
century.

Structure of the Course
This course will be taught for 6 lessons per week. Homework will be set weekly and deadlines
must be adhered to. Reading of textbooks and first-hand experience of works of art, architecture,
craft and design is essential.
