AS Course Outline
What is ICT?
ICT relates and understanding of 21st Century software technology used by
industries and Higher Education. It is used to progress to higher education or to the
world of work.
ICT will help you carry out complicated practical work using a wide range of
software and hardware. You will carry out investigations personalised your
learning. You will also build on existing skills.
What Skills Will You Develop Studying ICT?
This course should encourage you to:
- become discerning users of ICT,
- develop a broad range of ICT skills, knowledge and understanding
- think creatively, analytically, logically and critically
- apply skills, knowledge and understanding of ICT to a range of contexts to solve
problems
- understand the consequences of using ICT for individuals, organisations and society
- be aware of emerging technologies and the impact they will have on individuals,
organisations and society

- multimedia presentations for a college open day
- websites for a local nursery
- organising a blog for a local councillor
- organising a set of podcasts for a teacher

Living in the Digital World
Topics Include:
- Why is ICT being used
- Is it appropriate to use ICT
- What are the implications of its use for me, now and in
the future
- How does a particular use of ICT affect society

Structure of the Course
This course will be taught for 6 lessons per week. Homework will be set weekly and deadlines
must be adhered to. Reading of textbooks and political coverage in broadsheet newspapers is
essential.
